Change of PAN Card Address and Phone Number for NRIs

For Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), managing finances back home in India is a vital part of staying connected to their roots. Whether you are investing in mutual funds, buying property, or opening an NRE/NRO bank account, a Permanent Account Number (PAN) is your financial passport.

But a common point of confusion often arises: Can an NRI use a foreign address and a non-Indian phone number on their PAN card? The short answer is yes, absolutely. You can apply for a new PAN card or update an existing one using your current overseas address and foreign contact details. Here is everything you need to know about how it works and how to keep it updated.

Why Use a Foreign Address?

Using your actual overseas address ensures that any physical correspondence from the Income Tax Department—including the physical PAN card itself—reaches your doorstep securely. It also aligns your financial identity across borders, making compliance much smoother.

How to Apply or Update Your PAN with a Foreign Address

The process for both applying for a new PAN (Form 49AA) and updating an existing PAN (Changes/Correction Form) is fully digitized and can be done online via the Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL portals.

Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

  1. Select the Right Category: When filling out the online application, ensure you select your status as an individual NRI.

  2. Fill in the Address Details: In the address section, choose "Foreign Address" and fill in your current overseas residence. You will need to specify the country, zip code, and state/province.

  3. Provide Your International Number: You can enter your foreign country code and mobile number. This ensures you receive crucial SMS alerts regarding your tax status and updates.

Required Documents for NRIs

To successfully use or switch to a foreign address, you must upload or send valid supporting documents. The Income Tax Department accepts:

  • Proof of Identity: A copy of your Indian Passport or OCI/PIO card.

  • Proof of Foreign Address: A copy of your foreign passport, a bank account statement from your country of residence, a utility bill (electricity, water, or gas), or a residence visa/permit.

  • Proof of Date of Birth: Passport, driving license, or birth certificate.

Updating a New Address and Phone Number in the Future

Life abroad can be dynamic, and you might move cities or countries. The good news is that updating your PAN card with a new foreign address or phone number later on is just as seamless.

Whenever you change residences, simply visit the Protean or UTIITSL website, select "Changes or Correction in PAN Data," enter your existing PAN, and fill in the updated address and phone number. Once you pay the international processing fee and submit your new foreign address proof, the database will be updated, and a new physical card will be mailed to your new overseas home.

Final Thoughts

Your PAN card is designed to adapt to your global lifestyle. By keeping your foreign address and international phone number updated, you prevent important tax notices from going missing and ensure your Indian financial portfolio remains robust, compliant, and completely under your control.
