We get many inquiries about this question. Here are the answer to the same:
If you are an NRI which means either you have a foreign citizenship or lived outside india for more than 180 days in a year.
Then you are eligible for updating your Aadhar with your foreign corresponding address. (Visit : https://uidai.gov.in/en/contact-support/have-any-question/291-faqs/your-aadhaar/nri-aadhaar.html)
However the challenge is you need to physically visit an Aadhar Kendra in India and need to have an Indian phone number active.
You may be an Indian citizen but you can apply for an OCI as you are living aboard. This does not change any of your citizenship status means you are just getting an extra identity card. (https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome)
Please note that both Aadhar and OCI are not a proof of citizenship but only an identification.
Hence basic question you need to answer is where you wish to spend maximum of your time ?
If you are a foreign national (like the USA) and wish to come back to India for personal reasons and do not want to lose your citizenship of the USA, then still you can apply for an Aadhar. Or if you are living in Canada and having Canadian citizenship then you should apply for OCI which will help you to prove your Indian Identity.
