OCI Application Guide for NRIs

If you are an Indian citizen living in the United States or the United Kingdom or any other country, you are currently classified as a Non-Resident Indian (NRI). However, if you have recently acquired US or UK citizenship (or plan to), you will need to transition from NRI status to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
Because India does not allow dual citizenship, acquiring foreign nationality requires you to surrender your Indian passport. An OCI card acts as a lifelong, multiple-entry visa to live, work, and travel in India without needing a separate visa each time.
Here is everything you need to know about navigating the application process smoothly in the US and the UK.
NRI vs. OCI: Key Clarification
Before starting, it is crucial to understand where you fit:
NRI (Non-Resident Indian): An Indian citizen living abroad holding an Indian passport.
OCI (Overseas Citizen of India): A foreign citizen (e.g., US or UK passport holder) of Indian origin.
Step 0: The Mandatory First Step (Renunciation)
Before submitting an OCI application, you must officially renounce/surrender your Indian citizenship.
Submit a Renunciation Application: Request a Surrender/Renunciation Certificate through the official outsourcing partner (VFS Global in both the US and UK).
Submit Your Indian Passport: Your last held Indian passport will be canceled and returned to you along with your formal Renunciation Certificate.
(Note: In many cases, you can apply for Renunciation and OCI together or consecutively via the VFS portal).
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for an OCI Card
Step 1: Complete the Online Government Application
All OCI applications originate on the official Government of India portal: ociservices.gov.in.
Select "New OCI Registration".
Complete Part A (personal details, current foreign passport info, contact details).
Complete Part B (questions regarding background, family, and past Indian citizenship).
Upload Required Documents:
Applicant’s photo and signature (strictly adhering to physical dimension and file-size specifications).
Proof of current foreign citizenship (US/UK Passport).
Proof of Indian origin (Surrender Certificate, cancelled Indian passport, or naturalization certificate).
Step 2: Submit via VFS Global (US & UK)
The Government of India delegates OCI processing and document collection to VFS Global in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Head to the VFS Global website for your region (US or UK).
Register an account and link your Web Reference Number from the Government OCI portal.
Pay the required fees (Government fee + VFS service fee + courier fees).
Choose your submission mode:
In the US: Most applications are submitted via postal mail/courier to your designated VFS center based on jurisdiction.
In the UK: You can book an appointment to hand over physical copies or send them via postal service depending on current consulate guidelines.
Documents Checklist
Ensure you have physical copies and originals ready for verification:
Document Category | Documents Required |
Identity Proof | Current US/UK Passport (valid for at least 6 months). |
Proof of Indian Origin | Cancelled Indian Passport AND official Indian Citizenship Surrender Certificate. |
Address Proof | US/UK Utility bill, State ID, Driving License, or bank statement matching your current address. |

Processing Times & Key Benefits
Processing Time: Typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from the date VFS and the Consulate receive your complete documentation.
Key Benefits of OCI:
Lifelong, Multiple-Entry Visa: Visit India anytime without applying for tourist visas.
Parity with NRIs: Equality in economic, financial, and educational matters (e.g., opening NRE/NRO accounts, purchasing residential property).
No Police Registration: No requirement to register with local police (FRRO) regardless of the length of stay.
(Note: OCI holders cannot vote in Indian elections, run for public office, or purchase agricultural land).
